   Despite the "forest for the trees" being one of the culture's best-known clichés, businesses have a tough time seeking the rarefied, clarifying air at "10,000 feet."

   Theoretically, from way up there, you can see your customers, your sales force, your competition and your company. You can see the parking lots outside your store. You can see the delivery trucks bringing in the hard goods or products you're selling. You can see the manufacturers and business partners you depend on... see their challenges and triumphs.

   You can see your employees in their homes after they've put in a hard day. And you can see your family, and the pride in their eyes, after you've done the same.

    And you can see your future and your past.

   While no one can dispute the good that can be gained from "stepping back," the practical problems of imposing organizational "will" from the "top down," are downright prohibitive.

   The trick is to look at the situation from 10,000 feet, but find solutions that come from within... solutions that are born of core beliefs and stem from the fundamental nature of the organization. They are solutions that are, in fact, already in place.

   I.E. Do you need to leverage brand value for a product expansion? You already know how to do that. Do you want to increase the short term sales of a declining product? There is a way. Do you need to strengthen the resolve of a sales force? Yes.

   Solutions that are alive in the soul of the organization will be more powerful and be easier to implement. They will be unique, they will be "doable" in spite of the odds. Ultimately, they will be more powerful than any other option.
